Rabbi Natan Slifkin's new book, Sacred Monsters, is a very impressive work, combining exceptionally broad scholarship in such varied fields as science, classical literature, and the Jewish tradition. It provides fascinating insights into the literature of legendary creatures and their possible origins/5(7).

As you might have guessed, Sacred Monster doesn't stray too far from Westlake's preferred genre, even though you have to get pretty far in before a mystery starts to emerge. A big clue pops up in the first chapter, then the book loses itself in poking fun at the idiocies of Hollywood excess.3/5(1).

This is Edmund White's third collection of reviews most of which have appeared in the "New York Review of Books." This group is entitled "Sacred Monsters,"a French term meaning people who have become so successful that they are above reproach in the traditional meaning.

One of the most outrageous is Truman Capote/5(17). The book was such a disappointment after the enjoyable "Sorcerer's Apprentice" - fascinating reminiscences of people Richardson knew well, sewn together by the theme of Douglas Cooper's fiendishness.

"Sacred Monsters" is an unstructured hotchpotch of essays about seemingly randomly selected people, often unknown/5(4). To call her something like 'sacred monster' may well be explained within the book, perhaps even somehow in a way that makes it seem 'okay', but I personally want to see Maria treated better than that, even if this author is on her side.

So many have made a sport of Cited by: 4. Sacred Monsters is a collection of mini biographies including mostly gay/bi men and mostly groups of friends that discuss what it meant for these artists to be gay in their time.

I didn't know most of the people discussed (besides what was mentioned in City Boy or My Lives) and some pieces were tangents that were hard to follow/5. As you might have guessed, Sacred Monster doesn’t stray too far from Westlake’s preferred genre, even though you have to get pretty far in before a mystery starts to emerge.

A big clue pops up in the first chapter, then the book Sacred monster. book itself in poking fun at the idiocies of Hollywood excess/5(14). As a longtime aficionado of All Things Callas, I initially found the "Monster" in the title off-putting, until I realized that the author's choice of "Sacred Monster" was meant to be ironic, and that he was in fact a lifelong friend and admirer of this uniquely gifted dramatic coloratura soprano/5.
